Glazunov: String Quintet in A Major, Op. 39
Five world-class musicians unite for a performance of a rarely-heard chamber music gem: Alexander Glazunov's String Quintet in A Major. Purportedly inspired by Schubert's great C Major Quintet, it shares that work's doubled cello instrumentation but is otherwise its own unique sound world, full of attractive melodies and theatrical gestures. Also not to be overlooked on this program is the brilliant String Trio of Krzysztof Penderecki, the Polish composer who blazed a path from modernism through Neo-romanticism to a new-found synthesis of both.
Program length: 1 hour and 50 minutes
