Tomorrow's architects study The Kimmel Center
Roger Allen, Jabriel El-Amin, Brandon Howie, and Kaight Taylor --
four students at the Charter High School for Architecture and
Design (CHAD) -- recently made The Kimmel Center the subject of
their senior independent study project. During the second half
of their senior school year, they toured the construction site,
performed progressive photo documentation, conducted RPAC staff
and architect interviews, and visited other arts facilities
throughout the region. A high point of their investigation was
a trip to the New York City studio of Kimmel Center architect
Rafael Viñoly. Under the supervision of Sandra D. Young,
RPAC's Director of Education, Miguel Vazquez, CHAD faculty advisor
and Barbara Chandler Allen, Director of Development and Mentoring
at CHAD, the study culminated with a page featured on the
CHAD Web site.
This project provided an extraordinary opportunity for four young
design students to observe a major building become part of the
fabric of their city. They had access to many professionals
involved in decision-making, implementation of design and
construction. Since their graduation from CHAD last spring,
the four students have entered college and are studying
architecture, photography and design. In addition to receiving
RPAC's gratitude and that of posterity, the students will
return from college to be honored guests during Grand Opening
festivities in December 2001.
